Amsterdam, 24 – 27 September 2020

FIBER Festival is an Amsterdam based festival for audio-visual art, digital culture and electronic music.

With the program – which consists of multi-sensory art, performances and in-depth lectures – FIBER presents emerging art practices that offer alternative perspectives on our 21st century society.

With the festival theme of Instability the festival explores new ways of adapting to an age of planetary and societal changes. What opportunities are open to artistic making and thinking to contribute to this transformation?

Our living environment is often presented to us as stable and unquestionable. Landscapes, borders and technological infrastructures are considered static entities. Yet current crises now force us to transform the way we relate to our ecological surroundings. Extreme weather, droughts, wildfires and viruses are forces of nature that tear apart our modern way of living with far-reaching consequences.

The festival aims to seek artistic narratives, skills and sensibilities to prepare us for an alternative life in a period of uncertainty and radical instability.

Sonic Acts was founded in 1994. Over the years, it has established itself as a thematic festival with a strong focus on contemporary and historical developments at the intersections of art, technology, music, and science.

Each festival edition explores the chosen theme by means of an international conference, a wide range of concerts and performances, exhibitions and screenings, and embraces a broad spectrum of fields, practices, and disciplines.

Sonic Acts has developed into an organization for the research, development, and production of works at the intersection of art, science, and theory. It also commissions and co-produces new works, often in collaboration with international festivals, arts organizations, funders, and other partners.

Recent projects include the three-year art, research & commissioning project Dark Ecology, predominantly taking place in the Arctic region, and its globally touring programme Vertical Cinema.

FIBER presents Coded Matter(s); a new series of events exploring the explosion of digital processes taking place in hybrid art, design and music and the ripples this causes.

During these events artists, designers, musicians and other creatives will demonstrate the limitless possibilities offered by digital systems and creative coding platforms for the creation of visual art, generative design, interactive installations, multi-sensory performances and enchanting scenography.

On Sunday June 1, FIBER and Flemish Arts Centre de Brakke Grond will present the seventh edition of Coded Matter(s), titled Extended Senses. Intelligent technology grows around us and towards us as an extension of the body, both visible and invisible. The computer has migrated from lap to pocket. A wave of networked watches, glasses and implants is launched at technology trade shows and through sensors we are able to explore our environment in new ways. What are the possibilities of these new developments? And what are the dangers?

Coded Matter(s) will also function as a platform for bringing together frontrunners within the many creative disciplines. Furthermore, FIBER aims to open up these developments and make them accessible to a broad audience, giving them a unique opportunity to experience the many possibilities and tools. Within this series groundbreaking interactive installations, process based design, audiovisual dance and music performances, Do-It-Yourself (DIY) platforms, data art and digital scenography will be addressed.
