FOTONICA festival is an audiovisual event based in Rome. The 2020 edition will take place in a fully virtual format, on Twitch and in Virtual Reality.

A special online edition offering an alternative way of enjoying the numerous audiovisual artists involved from all over the world.

The festival is organised by the same ensemble that has been delivering the massive audiovisual artists meeting LPM, since 2004. Flyer SRL, Linux Club and FLxER.net are also behind Live Cinema Festival, the boutique event we attended (physically!) back in September.

Fotonica features a wide focus on the audiovisual arts, embracing the many features and different expressions within the new media.

Ultravioletto

Not just performances and VJ sets but also installations, lectures and workshops. In each edition, Fotonica offers a space for both artistic networking and outreach of new audiences.

This year, the organizers have created a virtual environment and live streaming channel where it is possible to discover and to participate in a safe, interactive and innovative way.

The team behind Fotonica is very conscious of the importance of international partnerships. This year the festival is collaborating with Athens Digital Art Festival , Lunchmeat Festival, Cerrado Mapping Festival, Live Cinema Festival, Cairotronica, Bright Festival and System11.

Therefore the event does not offer simple entertainment. Fotonica is a valuable hub for all audiovisual artists to keep inspiring and being inspired. Even from their own studios.

Coldcut

Arte19VVR VR Rooms will host the digital exhibitions, VR Mapping, lecture and live AV performances through VJTelevision and Twitch. Workshops, lectures and talks will take place on Meet and Zoom.

A full array of digital and virtual platforms to maintain the audiovisual event alive, despite the second wave Covid restrictions.

Hence the organizers are sending an important message to the audience: arts have to adapt to any arising scenario leveraging the full creative potential of the latest technologies.

The Podcast consists of a series of informal interviews to internationally renowned audiovisual artists.

When Gavin Borthwick from Light FX UK reached out to us, to pitch the idea of a podcast about projection mapping, we truly felt excited!

A podcast about audiovisual culture, it is something that has been hovering around our busy heads for a while. Therefore we didn’t hesitate to lend our expertise as media partners to something quite unique in the Audiovisual scene.

Light FX UK are releasing what we believe is a first for the UK. Colour My World Podcast is an intimate look into the exciting world of projection mapping.

Glastonbury, VJ showcase and a virtual reality event. Did I get your attention yet?

That’s right, in a moment where the ‘new normal’ is beginning to establish new ways of working in the world of audiovisual events, Lost Horizon Festival presents us with some of the world’s first responses to Corona Virus brought to us via the Gas Tower.

The team behind Glastonbury’s Shangri-La presents Lost Horizon festival, with 360º immersive visual shows from a healthy list of audiovisual artists that will make you forget we were in the middle of a pandemic, just like Woodstock (hip-hip-hooray!)

With the branding slightly reminiscent of a Madonna track ‘A REAL FESTIVAL, IN A VIRTUAL WORLD’ we are in for a treat, not to mention a fantastic list of VJing sumptuousness to explore and discover!

From the likes of Bertie Sampson, blinkinLAB, Bob Jaroc, DDL, Delta Process, Dr and Quinch, Enjoy Kaos, Fade In Fade Out, Greenaway & Greenaway, Joëlle, Koolik, L’Aubaine (check out the our interview with her) Lazershaft, Lazersonic, LEDS Akimbo, Limbic Cinema, Matt Lee Vs The Positronic Man, More Eyes, Primary Visual Cortex, Rebel Overlay, REM Visuals, WeAreMidnight.

Audiovisual artists

Yes, that’s a lot of new, fresh audiovisual artists coming soon on Audiovisual City, with great thanks to Creative Giants, for curating this mind blowing line-up, promising us a fully immersive digital art and music event.

“Taking the Gas Tower from the fields of the festival world into a groundbreaking new reality, Creative Giants are excited to be joining the team Shangri-La on their voyage of discovery to Lost Horizon, which redefines what a festival can be, creating ways for people to come together and experience music and art in a way we never would have previously imagined.”
Simon Vaughan, Creative Giants

What’s more, is nothing sells a virtual festival like the mouthwateringly designed website by Manchester studio, Instruct Studio. If this website were food, I’ve already been eating with my eyes and gotten pretty fat.

“We are thrilled to showcase some of the world’s leading VJs and visual artists in this way. The physical structure of The Gas Tower has been recreated in exact detail in virtual reality, allowing viewers to look around in full 360 degrees to fully immerse themselves in beautiful visuals.

Virtual Reality and gaming tools are rapidly becoming the essential vehicles of expressions for audiovisual artists during the Covid-19 imposed restrictions on public events.

We know, we know: no virtual experience can substitute the actual audiovisual event. But that is not the point. The point is experimenting and evolving beyond boundaries accordingly to the contingencies we face in a particular given time.

Audiovisual art as every form of art expression is driven by the tools available, the internal factors such as time and budget, and the external ones, such as venue restrictions or the total lack of them.

Now a lot of digital artists are facing the same problem and they are responding in different ways. The Russian audiovisual art collective VOLNA decided to turn their first solo exhibition: KEEP YOURSELF CLEAN into a virtual reality experience using Unreal Engine.

The video gaming tool is being widely use in audiovisual art and virtual events. It allows you to simulate real-time scenes and lighting effects. Exhibition visitors are invited to immerse themselves in the surroundings of each installation and can move freely in the room and choose any observation point.

The following works were reconstructed for the exhibition: the audiovisual installations NEUBAU (2016), Powerline (2017) and Rotor (2018), the light installation Octave (2018), the installation Vague (2019), and two kinetic light installations, Duel (2019) and Nymphéas (2020).

Despite the site-specific nature of the works, the overarching artistic principle behind all of them is the search for a universal language of pure forms. These forms, which correspond to the abstract subjects of the installations, are refined during an extensive detailing process, minimalist in their expressiveness and often even have a functional nature.

The eight installations generate intimate spaces where the viewers sits in contemplation of the structural semiotic elements that compose them: light, sound, movement. Each room triggers different emotions slowly revealing themselves while we explore the space and embrace its unique atmosphere.

The primary expressive element in VOLNA’s work is light and its various characteristics, its interaction with space, as well as its movement, the rhythm of chiaroscuro and the way chiaroscuro scenarios unfold in relation to time. Some works include synchronized sound, created to interact closely with the light’s dramaturgy.

The virtual exhibition space itself is hetero-topic and at the same time proportional to the original exhibition locations. The model exhibits displayed inside it are as close as possible to their real prototypes and preserve the original structural details, including the nature of the lighting and scenarios behind each of the live installations.

The original sound design and ambient sound environments are reproduced, and each work’s context and theme are discussed in an accompanying text.

In conclusion the exhibition Keep Yourself Clean attempts to embrace all the real and virtual layers of information that make up each of the works, and then let the works themselves become the determinants of perception.

Each of the contexts will “re-sort” in the virtual world, rethink and obey the laws of perception, and each work, in turn, will become an experience of sensory contemplation.

Edwin van der Heide describes himself as an artist, composer and researcher in the field of sound, space and interaction. He extends musical composition and musical language into spatial, interactive and interdisciplinary directions. His work comprises installations, performances and environments.
Heleen Blanken is a visual artist living and working in Amsterdam. She works across the media cinematography, photography and installation art. Her art is deeply influenced by the complexity of the separation between humanity and the natural environment. She explores the different layers of our aesthetic perception of the natural world.

TobyLikesMilk was founded by Phoenix , a multimedia performer and writer, alongside the coreographer Katy Higgins to create artworks discussing topics like queer culture, identity and safe spaces. Their work is thought provoking and innovative, drawing on their own life experiences to catch the viewers focus in an unapologetically loud and provocative fashion.

Matteo Myderwyk is a classical pianist at the conservatory, Myderwyk then decided to throw away the rulebook of classical music altogether, ending up enthralled in the wonderful world of free-jazz. Making music without plan or pre-written composition gave a new creative impulse that pushed the musician’s craft to exciting new directions.

AudiovisualCity will live this experience, and we hope you join us!

As they say clearly, they are a street festival, but for solidarity, for responsibility and to win the fight against the pandemic, they stay at home. But to make the quarantine easier to go through, they present a challenge.

LLUERNIA AT HOME, Fire and light festival at home, takes place tonight 28th March at 20:00, and it’s the first edition. A strange way to start, and as they expected, it’s a challenge.

The people who participated had to post a one minute video of a domestic light installation with fire or light with the hashtag #lluerniaathome and all the materials had to be found at home, they couldn’t go out to search for anything. The open call closed yesterday, 27th March and today we will be able to watch in live on the web page www.lluernia.cat

The projects selected will remain in consideration till the 7th November, where Lluernia will be exhibited in the street.

Lluernia festival of fire and light, aims to become an annual event to visualize the relationship between the city of Olot and its surroundings, with the fire of volcanoes and how this origin has transformed, not only the orography and the landscape, if not the same character and culture of the people of La Garrotxa. As references, despite accepting the differences in format, they mention the “Fête des Lumieres” that is held annually in Lyon (France), the Light Festival that for the first time this year has joined the Party of Santa Eulàlia in Barcelona and the “Mapping Festival” of Geneve (Switzerland).

Stay safe tonight, lighting up your house while watching this charming festival online!
