DEADLINE TO VOTE: 30 NOVEMBER

System 11 launched an Online VJing Competition open to all audiovisual artists.

As lockdown is swaying back to numerous countries audiovisual artists are getting creative (again) to keep the show going.

The System 11 VJing Competition is a very good opportunity for emerging Vjs to get their AV art in front of selected jurors, while also aiming for some juicy prizes.

Resolume and Imimot Software are in fact sponsoring the event offering their licensed audiovisual software to both winners and finalists: Resolume Arena & Avenue, CoGe VJ and VEZÉR.

System 11 VJing Competition will unravel as follows:

The team will preselect around ten candidates from a video demo of at least 30 seconds. Registrations are made using the form on System 11 website before November 24.

Then, a compilation will be put together with extracts from the preselected demo videos. The video compilation will be shared publicly, with links to full demo videos and artist information. The audience will be able to vote on the website from Friday November 27 to Monday November 30.

On Monday, November 30 the three finalists will be announced. The finalists will invited to do a live performance of around 7 minutes, streamed publicly, on Saturday, December 5. A jury then decides on the winner of the S.V.C. 2020 Sunday December 6.

System 11 Vjing Competition features a nice and interactive format that we are sure will get quite a few interesting audiovisual artists involved!

System11 is the center of gravity of a great nebula of friends, enthusiasts, artists and technicians.

Originally from the Drôme Provençale, longtime friends started to organize festivals and cultural events in 2014.

Over time they have forged their reputation on a balance of conviviality and quality. System11 is today a network of cultural organization and technical services.

DEADLINE: NOVEMBER 15 2020

The BBBank Newcomer Prize 2021 is the new international award for Projection Mapping.

The prize for projection mapping is the result of the collaboration among the ZKM, the KME Karlsruhe Marketing & Event Ltd. and the BBBank who is endowing the award.

The winning project will be showcased at the SCHLOSSLICHTSPIELE Karlsruhe 2021, the projection mapping event organized by ZKM.

Open calls are essential for the audiovisual arts, especially for emerging audiovisual artists who are still finding their spot within the industry.

As paid gigs have been heavily reduced due to the ongoing Covid crisis, art awards have never been so welcomed by arts communities.

Global Illumination | Photo Credits: Artis - Uli Deck

Too often audiovisual artists fall through the cracks of the awards guidelines. Being at the crossing point of diverse cultures and artistic disciplines, they lack a consistent and specific support within the arts industry.

That is why we are reducing the number of open calls we promote on our platform by concentrating on the paid awards that require no or very little entry fee.

So, let´s get down to the details of the BBBank Newcomer Prize 2021: the Grand Prize is 10,000€ plus production costs of up to 30,000€.

The production costs allowance covers all costs incurred during production, for example, fees and technical equipment.

Please note that winners of the Grand Prize agree that the work which was produced in the context of the competition will be shown exclusively at the SCHLOSSLICHTSPIELE Karlsruhe in 2021 and in the following years.

Second prize and third prize are respectively 5,000€ and 2,000€.

Second and Third Winners grant to ZKM first right to make an offer for joint implementation of the storyboards in the context of the SCHLOSSLICHTSPIELE Karlsruhe.

Here go the content guidelines outlined by the organizers:

The content should engage with the City of Karlruhe and/or the history of the city

The content should engage with a future technology in the area of sustainability

The content should engage with a technology/the history of technology that relates to Karlsruhe.

DEADLINE: 5 September 2020

bb15 launches the open call: Art + Magic for all audiovisual artist.

The contemporary art venue in Linz opens up its doors to an artist residency resulting in an exhibition or live event.

The open call aims at exploring the primordial relationship between art making and the concept of magic, especially related to the use of new technologies to inspire mystery and wonder.

Artistic gestures and processes can be seen as magical rituals, from which the myth of the artist has emerged over time. The aura of the artwork is used to cast a spell on its viewer!

In the art scene in particular, mysticism around art-making is kept alive by common rituals such as exhibitions, vernissages, and performative events, which propose collective shared experiences of something bigger.

For this open call, bb15 is seeking original project proposals that trigger mental associations and subliminal experiences at the junction of art, ritual and magic.

The residency program focuses on and explores the interplay between contemporary visual art and auditory practices, in relation to the theme of art+magic. The call doesn’t exclude any artistic media.

Teresa Cos: Tunnel Boring Machine

During the residency at bb15, the selected artists will be expected to push forward and bring further their proposal into a work that will be presented to the public at the end of the residency.

It is highly desirable that the invited artists create specific and new works during their stay.

Conditions:

– Duration: 2-3 weeks

– Possible periods: Spring 2021 or Autumn 2021

– There is a € 1200 all-in budget per artist in residence. This amount should cover all costs such as travel, equipment, production costs, daily expenses, and artist fees. Artists will be provided with free accommodation and workplace at the premises of bb15.

DEADLINE: 31 August 2020

Carulla Foundation wants to support experienced audiovisual artists affected by the health and social crisis.

During these tough times we praised organizations across the world promoting local and international open calls aimed at tackling the current Covid-related situation.

This is an open call for artists of all nationalities resident in Catalonia. The foundation offers 20 scholarships worth 4000€ to support artistic creations in public space.

Carulla Foundation is looking for specific proposals addressing the effects of Covid within the Catalan Society. The main aim is to offer the necessary conditions to showcase artistic creations designed to be implemented in public space.

The foundation supports creative processes that encompass all cultural and artistic expressions or manifestations understood from a wide point of view.

They are looking for new artistic creations addressing the impact that Covid-19 is having on Catalan society and the challenges arising from it.

The artwork must have a clear transformation goal and must be developed in the public space, also incorporating a digital alternative to face possible new periods of lock-down.

Creators with a minimum career of two years and with residence in Catalonia are encouraged to submit their proposals.

One scholarship will be awarded per project and creator. Several creators cannot present the same project to be developed within the framework of a group.

All projects will be scrutinized during the month of September. The development process will take place between October 2020 and January 2021.

At the end of January the artists will be required to present a memoir reflecting the process and the creative proposal.

Until the 31st of July and from August 24 to 31 there will be a dedicated phone line for any arising questions: +34 932 090 948. The foundation can also be reached via email.

DEADLINE: 04 September 2020 18:00 (Japan standard time)

We are constantly scanning our map for new opportunities for audiovisual artists, especially outside the European network.

It is quite hard to map out the Asian audiovisual scene, mostly due to language barriers and different social media landscape.

Therefore we are very pleased to present you with this art contest for the Tokyo based media arts festival.

The Japan Media Arts Contest is a long-lasting institution reaching its 24th edition this year. The call is open to all audiovisual artists worldwide and encompasses the following categories:

Art Division | Entertainment Division | Animation Division | Manga Division

For each division the elected jury will award the following prizes, based on the artistic value and creativity of the artwork:

Grand Prize (1.000.000 JPY), Excellence Awards (500.000 JPY), Social Impact Award (500.000 JPY), New Face Awards (300.000 JPY), U-18 Award (certificate, trophy), Special Achievement Award (certificate).

It is interesting to notice the wide range of categories not necessarily related to the new media arts world. The inclusion of animation and manga highlights their wide recognition in the Japanese scene as special forms of art.

The Japan Media Arts Contest offers opportunities for young and emerging artists as well as recognized professionals making the audiovisual event a turning point every year for artistic innovation and excellency.

The Japan Media Arts Festival has been awarding prizes to outstanding artistic works since its establishment in 1997.

It is supported by The Agency of Cultural Affairs, Government of Japan to develop and promote the creation of Japanese and international media arts.

Through the annual Exhibition of Award-winning Works, the festival has offered the opportunity to the audience of directly appreciating these celebrated works.

The attendants are also invited to participate to the side events such as symposia, screenings and artists’ showcases.

DEADLINE: 31 JULY 2020

SHAPE is a platform for audiovisual culture and innovative music from Europe.

It’s a three-year initiative co-funded by the Creative Europe programme of the European Union. The platform was formed by members of ICAS (International Cities of Advanced Sound) and involves 16 audiovisual events and cultural centres.

Each year they choose 48 audiovisual artists and musicians to participate in performances, workshops and residencies across the network.

Due the pandemic crisis we are living we are in need of a an internationally coordinated support to the new media arts, often slipping through the cracks of cultural funding due to their hybrid nature.

Of course every open call or artist residency is welcome, no matter where it comes from. But more coordination among venues and events will bring more opportunities and visibility for young and recognized artists.

Europe has the advantage (still, let’s see for how long) of a long-lasting infrastructure that connects different cultural scenarios across a myriad of different languages and beliefs.

SHAPE: Sound, Heterogeneous Art and Performance in Europe is the result of this network in action. By fostering audiovisual artists in showcasing their work internationally and audiences in experiencing a very diverse cultural offer.

DEADLINE: 1 SEPT 2020 | 30 days Residence, Castelló (Spain).

European open call for audiovisual projects of art, science, technology and video games related to the climate emergency.

The Climate & Video Game artist in residence is part of the Living Lab Planeta Debug research project activities.

The purpose of this call is to grant two residency and production scholarships to develop an art project. The project will encompass science, technology, video games and ecology in order to address the climate emergency.

The Universitat Jaume I in Castello (Spain) will support two original projects in a one month residency where the audiovisual artists will get scientific assistance from the university research labs.

The unprecedented rate of global warming is melting the polar ice caps, raising sea levels and undermining food and water security for many of the world’s people.

The response to this situation is being too slow for what is probably the greatest challenge that the human species has ever had to face. In this global climate emergency situation it is necessary to raise awareness and act collectively to find solutions that can at least slow down the current climate change to avoid the foreseeable dystopian future that lies ahead.

In this context, this call raises the need to think collectively from art, science, technology, video games and ecology to raise awareness and articulate responses to climate change.

Through the composition of knowledge and interdisciplinary collaboration, this call proposes to use the capacity of contemporary art and the practices of visualization as a vehicle to raise awareness and propose responses that address the challenge of climate change and global sustainability.

The financial sum for each of the two artist residencies in UJI laboratories has a total budget of 3,830 euros divided as per the following installments:

– €1500 in fees, to which the applicable taxes will be applied.

– €1250 for production of the project selected subject to approval of its budget.

– €1080 for travel expenses.

From July 1, 2020, the call for artist residencies of the Planeta Debug Project is officially opened.
