A few weeks ago we had the chance to attend one of the 3 days schedule of the Splice Festival in London. The brand new festival forms the UK branch of AVNode, the international network for visual art. From the 3d to the 5th of June local and international artists have proposed workshops, panel discussions, screenings and AV performances in different venues across London.

A special occasion to explore the latest trends in the Audiovisual creation. All the proposals featured high standards in the set up and performances obtaining a great response from the audience who has been keeping eyes and ears peeled at all time.

The festival program was hectic and had a really good balance between education and entertainment. Our most sincere congrats to the organizers for the hard work and the careful selection of artists and performances. We attended the event on Saturday the 4th of June at Shape, creative warehouse space in East London.

The AV set featured doom atmospheres and hammering rhythms.

Dub sounds perfectly combined with a minimalistic black and white visual set. Figurative narration and abstractions merged together creating an evolving audiovisual environment to be explored by the viewer.

Mark Pilkington is an audiovisual composer and participated at Splice Festival with his screening piece “Moirè” . His works explores the synesthetic relationship between sound and image. The visual space is composed by a fusion of glitchy distorted abstractions and excerpts from VHS video tapes.

The images are captured inside the visual planes creating a unity among the coded visuals and the source material. Starting from the research of meaning the viewer is progressively led to a more complex aesthetic appreciation of the piece.

Straight after the AV interferences of Mark Pilkington, D-Fuse took over with Latitude [31°10N/121°28E] an emblematic performance we were looking forward to see. The show is driven by the notion of drifting through the city.

The visual set up consisted in a combination between screens and see-through loans. Thanks to this immersive installation the viewer is immediately dragged in this audiovisual journey through the cities of China.

D-Fuse creates an alternative psycho-geography by the AV remix of crowds, journeys, lights, deserted space and architectural forms together with the data visualization related to the imagery. The artists (re)connect political maps and statistical data to the human beings who live those places showing the rapid transformation of the urban contexts of Shanghai, Guangzhou and Chongqing. The project has been supported by the British Council and the Arts Council England.

Liam Roberts has showcased “Unwaves” a semi-improvised AV performance mixing analogical and digital tools. The colourful live VJ Set plays along with the perky improvisations of the drums, guitars and synths.
Beyond space and time The AV narration is built upon a non-linear juxtaposition of different abstract and organic images. These simultaneous fragments show us the complex relationship between environment and human beings featuring an intense vortex of emotions and impressions. The project has been supported by the British Council.

Many thanks to the organizers for giving us the chance to attend this new important spot in the AV worldwide panorama. Without doubt Splice hit the spot and we truly hope this 1st edition will have many more to come!

The 13th of april in Razzmatazz ( Barcelona) we had the enjoyable opportunity to receive the producer and performer of electronic music Aaron Funk with the stage name of Venetian Snares. Mira festival and Miles Away were the responsible for carrying out the surprising 3D visuals of Eyesberg.

The show started with a live perfomance of the electronic artist Ralp, that created a modular synthesizers set with an opened configuration to the improvisation. In this case, Devide, a Barcelona studio, was the one in charge of the audiovisuals, creating minimalist graphics with special geometric forms inspired in black and white.

Then was the turn of the amazing Venetian Snares. The canadian artist composed what he does best: IDM, breakcore and glitch. He had just edited Traditional Synthesizer Music (Time Sig) and this was the first time he did an analog live performance. Funk has recordings in albums edited by discographic firms like History of the future,Isolate/DySLeXiC ResPonSe, addict, Sublight, Low-Res, Hymen, y Planet Mu.

The creative laboratory Eyesberg (Barcelona) designed a 3D show generated in real time synchronized with music, mixing generative art and video megaloops. We had to watch it through special glasses to appreciate with a higher intensity the 3D effect.

Photographic Reportage and Review, by Hayley Cantor (VJ AYL)

This year Audiovisual City attended the festival LAPSUS in Barcelona for the first time to check out the audiovisual offerings (and a little bit of the music too). Lapsus consists of three branches of musical activity including Lapsus Radio, record label, Lapsus Records and annual festival held at the Centre of Contemporary Culture in Barcelona (CCCB).

Unsure of what to expect for this 3rd edition of the festival, we went armed with camera to see what audiovisual treats we could find. Unfortunately we weren’t able to last the full 12 hours of the festival (one of the down sides of organising an all-dayer) but we think we probably caught some of the best bits.

The festival venue was divided very well, with three main spaces that consistently offered similar personalities throughout the day: the main hall, theatre and outside space. The main hall was well allocated to the more up tempo techno artists with more dancable sets such as the likes of F-On & Urtzi, and Lanoche, whereas the theatre was quite rightly reserved for more experimental sounds, with many spectators lying on the floor to enjoy the ambience. Each location was equally assigned with a visual counterpart, with the festival relying on 3 big local visual artists to support the audio pros: In da cratz, Mau Morgó and Slurp TV.

Visuals by In da Cratz

In da cratz is an artistic duo formed by Miki Arregui (Videocratz) and David Sala (Lectrovision) who filled our eyes with a wide range of stimulating live video performance throughout our time at Lapsus on Saturday. Between them, they provided an excellent combination of styles in order to adapt to each and every one of the artists performing in the central hall, with everything from more abstract effects through to some incredible city travel shots filmed in Hong Kong, including Wang Chai Station. Never before has an audiovisual performance given me such a strong desire to travel before and was reminiscent of Filastine’s visual performance with street scenes of Barcelona’s Raval neighbourhood.

F-On & Urtzi, Spain, Visuals – In da Cratz

If there’s one thing I would like to suggest for the next edition it would be a little more accessible information on each of the artists, with more regular social media updates. I felt that I had to do quite a lot of leg-work myself to work out who exactly F-On & Urtzi are, but fortunately there’s an excellent article by soundofthought, which explains the whole artistic project in great detail. Thanks for clarifying guys!

Lanoche, Spain, Visuals – In da Cratz

Sadly for the organisers of Lapsus, one of their headliners, Karen Gwyer was cancelled at the last minute (we didn’t manage to find out why exactly). Though we weren’t disappointed with the replacement, Lanoche (‘the night’ in Spanish) from vinyl-only record label, So Unreal (Madrid) created an interesting fusion between house and techno, which, accompanied by some impressive video footage from In da Cratz, made for a captivating audiovisual performance.

David Cordero, Spain

Next up was a live performance from David Cordero in the CCCB theatre, can only be described as a transcendental trip. Here, despite the visuals (video footage of a beach), the majority of the room were lying on the floor, heads supported by jumpers and coats to enjoy the excellent acoustics of this room and Cordero’s artistry.

Donnacha Costello, Ireland

Though you would never guess from the name, Donnacha Costello is from Dublin, Ireland. His performance was perhaps the most lively that we saw in the theatre space, with a very urban feel – his visuals were not that dissimilar to those of Lanoche’s, with travelling shots through a night-time city scape in black and white, brought a real urban feel to his music.

We definitely will be checking out the next edition of Lapsus, if not simply to have the opportunity to check out Slurp.tv and Mau Morgó, who unfortunately we missed this time around. Thanks Lapsus for an artistic Saturday experience.

Now I’ll simply leave you with the photographic report to enjoy, thanks for reading.

The seventh edition of Mutek festival in Barcelona opened its doors this year to many different kinds of electronic music expression this year, accompanied by quite a diverse range of visual styles.

DAY 1# A/VISIONS Institut Frances

The Institut Frances usually serves as a great starter for the rest of the Mutek schedule, providing two performances, this year the first was by Edu Comelles, followed by a sound and visual experience by Franck Vigroux and Kurt D’Haeseleer with their project ‘Centaure’.

Edu Comelles

Edu Comelles performance, more that a visually stimulating show, was a more ambient, environment, whereby the artist coaxes the audience into an almost meditative state. He uses the full screen to project a glass of water, with subtle camera movements to create a space for concentration directed much more at the audio than visual experience. Many of those in the audience closed their eyes after just a few minutes to absorb the sound in all its beauty.

Franck Vigroux and Kurt D’Haeseleer – Centaure

If anything could be in more opposition to Edu’s performance, that of Centaure had to be it, with basslines that vibrated in the chests of the spectators and a dynamic, fast-paced visual projection including everything from geometric forms to images of Christ, and faces seemingly suffocating in plastic. A provocative show both musically and visually speaking, not to missed.

Day 2# A/VISIONS 2, Barts Teatre

Day two saw a change of location to the majestic Bart’s theatre, in the heart of the city, with a further A/VISIONS session and two quite contrasting performances once again.

AFLOAT, Nev. Era

A project composed by Nev.Era and the pianist Albert Catalá.

Afloat is rich, organic visual performance that truly transports the audience into nature, accompanied by an ambient electronic jazz sound. The project takes full advantage of the potent projector in the theatre and invites the public into the sea and forest scenes projected. The image quality was exceptional.

Bugge Wesseltoft, Henrik Schwarz & Dan Berglund – “Trialogue”

Some of them we found to be quite remarkable, such as the musical fusion of Bugge Wesseltoft, Henrik Schwarz & Dan Berglund with their project “Trialogue”, which, whilst went unaccompanied by visuals, was a spectacle in itself as the three artists engaged in a seemingly complex and intimate musical dialogue live on stage. The performance really saw boundary pushing in terms of the presentation of the union of a wide variety of music genres.

On Thursday we could see in Barts Club the A/Visions 2 program which included impressive artists like Nev.era with his project “Afloat” and On friday the program took place in the Old factory of Estrella Damm where “Experience 1” could bring us the opportunity to listen to exceptional artists like Adeline in the Intorno lab or Pole & MFO, Shigeto and The Orb in the Parking area.

The three generate a music dialogue mixing jazz, classic music and electronic music.

INTERMISSION, Shigeto

Zach Saginaw hasn’t found his next step yet, and takes its title quite literally. This last EP it’s a transition between ideas and inspiration. He said these songs aren’t a strong message, he’s teaching himself a new language.

KaleidoSoup is the biggest international meeting of VJs and visual performers in South-East Asia. This first edition will be held in Ho Chi Minh City (Vietnam), on November 27 and 28, 2015.

Its organizers call KaleidoSoup the Visual Art Performers Playground in South-East Asia. The open call of KaleidoSoup is addressed first to vj communities and groups of South-East Asia as occasion to compact and fraternize, but all the visual performers of the Globe are invited to join the feast and share their passion for AV performances of all kind. KaleidoSoup is open to all visual art performers and VJs, from amateurs to professionals. Submissions will be now collected till October 31, starting from this web page:

http://flxer.net/LAV/events/kaleidosoup/participate

Kaleidosoup shows the power of imagination. Visual performers are usually the most innovative professionals of the creative industry, and they are invited to gather from the South-East Asia regions (and beyond) to take part in KaleidoSoup in order to share tricks, solutions, insights, projects, knowledge, wrapped up in performances to show and shine.

This meeting is designed to celebrate innovative forms of performances and is an unmissable occasion for artists and creatives to get inspiration and learn something new. All the VJs and visual artists who will have applied for KaleidoSoup will be welcomed in the meeting space on a friday 27 and saturday 28 afternoon (from 1 to 8pm) where they can share and exchange knowledge and tricks, enjoy showcases, hold talks and present on-going projects.

On saturday night, right after the meeting space will be closed, from 9pm till late the VJ Arena will be operative and its large screens will be turned on showcasing several AV performances and some indoor 3D video mapping.

Soon after, a VJ Clash will blow minds and eyes away on the beats of the best electronic music producer in Saigon. The reference model comes from Europe and this meeting is supported by an international organization of VJs, the LPM, with its new media artists that started from Western Europe; nowadays, extending its network to all the Globe and including a large number of VJ communities. Audiovisual City has been selected as official media partner.

KaleidoSoup is produced by L.A.V., a collective of visual and sound artists based in Ho Chi Minh City, well-founded by Antonio Rosciano (vj paki), Daniel Long (DDL) and Tung Le (Crazy Monkey) and completed by Julien Noyer and Nhan Do (Solid Machine).
