Junichi Akagawa is a Kyoto-based audiovisual artist and programmer.

He is constantly seeking new means of artistic expression to enhance the audience’s synesthetic experience.

He performed in the collaborative event presented by MUTEK.JP and the 22nd Japan Media Arts Festival last year.

Akagawa has recently premiered “Geist on the lake” (filmed and recorded in a hidden lake in Kyoto) at MUTEK Montreal 2020.

Through this intriguing audiovisual performance, he questions the Internet as a medium to share and archive “truth” and “reality”. I enjoyed how he illustrated his point through the ambiguous nature of the performance – it wasn’t quite clear whether he was ever “really” in the lake.

Junichi Akagawa – Geist on the Lake | MUTEK Montreal 21 | Screenshot by Sumire Moncholi

“Geist on the Lake”

If a tree falls in the forest but there is no one to witness it, did it really fall? If there is sound but no one to listen to it does it really exist? Within Geist on the Lake Junichi Akagawa explores the question of truth as a relational matter. Captured at a hidden lake on the outskirts of Kyoto, a place without any real connection to the outside world, Akagawa asks the question, did he really perform, if there was no one to witness his performance? Does a mere recording of a performance really constitute the truth that a performance did indeed take place? Through these questions Akagawa critically approaches the current age of increased online streaming activities and the related questions of the internet as a medium, as an archive, and what constitutes truth in the virtual world.
On “Geist on the Lake” – Junichi Akagawa

He has produced and released his own music through labels such as Hz-records or Shrine.jp, and presented his audiovisual work through many screenings, live performances and installations across Japan and abroad.

The multidisciplinary artist is also part of the creative collective 1-10 (one to ten) formed by almost 200 creative professionals with a diverse background. Their aim is to work on bringing innovation to today’s society through creativity and advanced technology.

The artist is currently participating in Jeep Japan’s Real Hybrid e-creators campaign in collaboration with MUTEK.JP. Until the 4th of October you can vote the audiovisual works presented by 7 artists, including Akagawa’s shown below. The theme is “New freedom and adventures”, and jury members include Hiroaki Umeda.

Mutek Montreal present their audiovisual event programme in a special hybrid format as part of their edition 21.

This is a world of constant evolution and incessant refinement – the “MU” in MUTEK refers consciously to the notion of “mutation”.
MUTEK team

Year 2020. Needless to say this applies to the “special” year we are all experiencing, dare to say, more than any other year…

MUTEK Montreal 2019 | Photo credits: Bruno Destombes

The 21st edition of MUTEK is happening. Following MUTEK SF NEXUS in May, the digital creativity festival is mutating into a hybrid edition.

We find this original format with both physical and virtual events to be an interesting experimental adaptation to the Covid outbreak.

Through September 8th-13th we will attend numerous events across 3 virtual stages with more than 60 performances, an interactive Gallery featuring more than 20 VR, AI, video and audio artworks, an Auditorium of master classes and lectures, and a MUTEK archives Listening Room.

The festival will include 19 world premiers and the participation of more than a 100 artists.

DEADLINE: 1 SEPT 2020 | 30 days Residence, Castelló (Spain).

European open call for audiovisual projects of art, science, technology and video games related to the climate emergency.

The Climate & Video Game artist in residence is part of the Living Lab Planeta Debug research project activities.

The purpose of this call is to grant two residency and production scholarships to develop an art project. The project will encompass science, technology, video games and ecology in order to address the climate emergency.

The Universitat Jaume I in Castello (Spain) will support two original projects in a one month residency where the audiovisual artists will get scientific assistance from the university research labs.

The unprecedented rate of global warming is melting the polar ice caps, raising sea levels and undermining food and water security for many of the world’s people.

The response to this situation is being too slow for what is probably the greatest challenge that the human species has ever had to face. In this global climate emergency situation it is necessary to raise awareness and act collectively to find solutions that can at least slow down the current climate change to avoid the foreseeable dystopian future that lies ahead.

In this context, this call raises the need to think collectively from art, science, technology, video games and ecology to raise awareness and articulate responses to climate change.

Through the composition of knowledge and interdisciplinary collaboration, this call proposes to use the capacity of contemporary art and the practices of visualization as a vehicle to raise awareness and propose responses that address the challenge of climate change and global sustainability.

The financial sum for each of the two artist residencies in UJI laboratories has a total budget of 3,830 euros divided as per the following installments:

– €1500 in fees, to which the applicable taxes will be applied.

– €1250 for production of the project selected subject to approval of its budget.

– €1080 for travel expenses.

From July 1, 2020, the call for artist residencies of the Planeta Debug Project is officially opened. Check the open call guidelines.

We present the new media artist, Mónica Rikić, whose work focuses on code, electronics and non-digital objects to create interactive projects often framed as experimental games.

Her interest lies in the social impact of technology, human-machine-human coexistence and the reappropriation of technological systems to rethink them through art. From educational approaches to sociological experimentation, her projects propose new ways of interacting with the digital environment that surrounds us.

She’s participated in festivals such as Arts Electronica, Sónar and FILE, among others. She’s been awarded at Japan Media Arts Festival, AMAZE Berlin, Margaret Guthman Musical Instrument Competition (Atlanta) and with a BBVA Foundation Leonardo grant to work on a research project about robots and social interactions.

She has also done artistic residencies at TAGin Montreal, QUT- The Cube in Australia, Platohedro in Medellin and Medialab Prado in Madrid.

Currently she’s part of two Creative Europe projects: Contested Desires and ARTificial IntelligenceLab.

We encourage you to see her webpage to know more about different projects that connect humans with technology.

Murcia, May 28 – 30 2020

In recent years we are witnessing a true technological revolution with a global impact in all areas of society, from the various forms of entertainment to education. The technology, in constant change and transformation, marks a rapid pace that shapes our way of seeing the world, a profound reflection on new ways of apprehending reality becoming necessary.

It is undeniable: the music has a leading role in the AV world. This is not a mute revolution. This becomes obvious if we consider the importance of music on mobile devices and communication technologies.

Within this context and following the trail of success of the previous editions, Congreso Internacional Música y Cultura Audiovisual MUCA VII will be held on 21, 22 and 23 January 2020 at the University of Murcia. Same aim of the event ahead: to encourage the knowledge exchange and dissemination among sound and AV professionals and researchers. To be achieved through analysis, reflection and criticism in music and culture of recent decades.

TOPICS

Quebec, February 5-9 2020

Mois Multi 2020 is an archipelago of artists who express themselves madly, humanly, in a gigantic and dazzling spasm of life.

In a nutshell, the 2020 programs revolves around things that collapse. A subject of undoubted importance in the current times which affects us in the private and political life. The spark for this edition came, among other things, from the APA office, which approached us almost a year ago to talk about collapse. A joyful bonfire was born from this desire.

This is an edition generated by an unstoppable youth that also leaves space to a wise and proud guard. It’s young, casual, punk and contemporary. Festival curator, Emile Beauchemin aims to program a diversity of humans, approaches, subjects and ways to approach this world that we are constantly trying to understand and reconstruct.

Mois Multi is a project created by Recto Verso whose mission is to support and promote the research, creation and dissemination of multidisciplinary and electronic arts.

In every edition, MM programs aim to bridge the gap between artworks and public, offering an unique and accessible experience of the art and the world.

We couldn’t miss this retrospective exhibition about the father of Video Art and one of the main references in the history of art for Audiovisual experimentation.

More than 200 artworks ranging from TV screens, to robots, video walls and immersive installations. A must-go event meticulously curated by the Tate to give insight into the work of this game-changing artist and researcher.

The first thing that strikes in Paik’s work is his playfulness. No matter what device he uses, the outcome is always lighthearted and pervaded by a witty sense of humor.

His personal relationship with technology has always featured curiosity and optimism. In TV Garden he creates a surreal immersive environment where TV screens and plants aesthetically coexist harmoniously, although weirdly.

His attitude shows a deep connection with Buddhist philosophy. TV Buddha clearly states this. With Buddha watching the TV and watching himself at the same time, he helps us to realise that our body merges with the nature in the same way it merges with technology. One is all and all is one.

Paik embraces chaos and technology all together in his Zen driven artistic experimentation. In his Robots, wires, pins, knobs, every component is well exposed in his fascinating ironic mess. Paik’s playful approach intends to humanize technology bringing it closer to the people, easier to grasp and easier to intervene.

Paik manipulates analog technology not only for aesthetic purposes but also as a political act. His anarchist artistic experimentation counteracts the consumerism driven by the mass manipulation through the TV.

Audiovisual City top picks of Paik’s expo are undoubtedly the two spectacularly immersive installations: Video Wall and Sistine Chapel.

Video Wall is a mesmerizing live collage of multiple video feeds. It strongly communicates the instability of perception and lack of focus in the mass media world.

Our eyes restlessly bounce within the video space from one feed to the other. Only after thorough observation we realize each image is linked up with its surrounding revealing the artistic and rhythmic pattern of the artwork. Only going through these steps we manage to embrace the multiple inputs as one video totem.

The Sistine Chapel is a stunningly sumptuous Audiovisual feast. It’s a large-scale installation made by 40 video projectors exhibited in plain sight in the centre of the room as if they were musical instruments.

This baroque multi-projection is a pioneering experiment of video mapping. As it’s really hard to focus on the single video feeds, the viewer is lead to appreciate the overall immersive AVscape created by this chaotically symphonic orchestra.

BERLIN, 28 January – 01 February 2020

Transmediale is a Berlin-based festival and year-round project that draws out new connections between art, culture, and technology. It considers technology as being more than the digital world and the cultural as being more than what emerges from within institutionalized fields of production.

The formats of the festival change from year to year as Transmediale tries to foreground the intrinsic link between trans-disciplinary thinking and cultural practice.

Inspired by the pre-Internet idea of networks, transmediale 2020 – End to End focuses on both forgotten and potential futures with and without networks. Leaving behind a decade marked by a backlash against the Internet and the network society, transmediale aims at a comprehensive re-evaluation of networks and their limits. The exhibitions runs until the 1st of March.

The exhibition and the conference program is curated by artistic director Kristoffer Gansing with supporting advice from Clemens Apprich, Daphne Dragona, Geert Lovink, and Florian Wüst, all of whom will also be responsible for different program items.
